Install printers on OSX while using physics common wireless access points

  • Select "Print & Fax" in System Preferences.
  • Click the "+" button.
  • Click"Advanced"; if you don't see Advanced, try enlarging the dialogue box or, if you still don't see it, right-clicking the "Add Printer" menu bar and choosing "Customize Toolbar ..." so that you can add the Advanced button. Note that the system may pause for a minute while searching for printers.
  • "Windows printer via spoolss" from the "Type" menu.
  • Enter a Device URL (smb://physprt/laser326, smb://physprt/hpe241 or smb://physprt/clj) according to the printer you are installing.
  • Enter a name for your printer (laser326, hpe241 or clj)
  • Choose the printer manufacturer and model by "Selecting Software" under Use: For laser326, choose "HP laserjet P4010 series", for hpe241, choose "HP Laserjet 600 M601 M602 M603", For the colour laser printer, Select "HP color Laserjet 4700". If the printer driver is not listed, download and install HP printer driver first.
  • Click the "Add" button.
  • Installable Options dialog appears. For laser326 and hpe241, tick "Duplex Printing Unit". You can choose whether to print to single or double side in your application. For clj, set:
    • Total RAM >= 192MB or hard disk
    • Tray3=installed
    • Paper method="Nearest size & scale"
    • Make sure "Duplex Unit" is marked.
We can now test to send job to the printer queue. Open your application, for example, firefox, and print a page. Since the printer server needs to know a valid user. A username and password import dialog will appear (Lion) or after you opened the printer by clicking its icon in the dock and clicking the "Resume" button (OSX Snow Leopard). Type in your username and password for your account on physserv, tick "Remember this password in my keychains" and then click "OK". See the following two pictures as an example.

For double sided printing you might need to also change the printer default settings to duplex. In a Mac you can not change basic printer settings easily, instead, you have to first enable CUPS browser GUI using comand line, and then edit printer settings using your browser...For instructions, please see e.g. here
